Marcaseet or Marcasite - how to pronounce Marcasite!

Remember that fabulous song “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” by Ira & George Gershwin? The song with the well known lyric: “You like potato; I like potahto - you like tomato; I like tomahto.” Perhaps they could have added another verse “You like marcasite; I like marcaseet.” Hmm, maybe not; it doesn’t scan very well with the rhythm of the song.

Throughout the years of dealing with marcasite buyers at trade fairs or in store, I found so much confusion as to the correct pronunciation. I would refer to it as how I thought it was pronounced; however I would often hear customers saying it differently. I thought, “Have I been mispronouncing it all these years?” How embarrassing!

Well, I am here to tell you that it rhymes with ‘shite’ and not ‘sheet.’ Just as I thought. Phew!
